The brief
Kōen sells rare teas and ceramics from small Japanese makers. The owners needed a shop that could also host tastings for twelve, on a narrow street-level unit with one window and a very small budget.

The approach
We gave the room one long table in solid oak, wrapped the walls in simple shelving for the ceramics, and filtered daylight through paper screens. Everything else was left out, so the tea and the objects do the talking.

People come in for a bag of tea and end up staying for an hour. That was exactly the point.
